On June 16th, 1858, President Abraham Lincoln gave his “House Divided Speech”. The speech reflects then candidate Lincoln’s position that “A house divided against itself cannot stand”. This position was all too familiar to Lincoln’s audience as a religious statement by Jesus recorded in all three synoptic gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke):

Perhaps it is time to review Lincoln’s perspective as the speech was given before he was president and a full 3 years before the US Civil War. His purpose was clear. He was attempting to let the people of the country that the road they were headed down led to War. Lincoln was smart enough to understand that race (slavery) wasn’t the driving issue. It also included economic aspects and States Rights vs. the Federal oversight from a large, centralized government.
You don’t have to be a BA in History, with a minor in the American Civil War to see history repeating itself. Yes, America, our “House” is divided. But I highly encourage the good, sane, centrists people of the USA to speak up and get ahold of this ridiculous narrative that we are headed to War. It is unwarranted and unwanted.
When you rally with family and friends during the upcoming holidays, squelch any discussion you may hear of our US house being divided. It is NOT, to the extent it was in 1858. As the rational, sane Americans in the room, it is our duty and we are obligated to direct the talk of internal conflict out of our homes.
Granted, we have many things we must continue to try and reconcile, but a path of unbridled violence against fellow American’s is not a path we should take.
Take it from a ‘Boomer’. Treat people how you want to be treated. Respect opinions of others. But understand the larger picture and know what is important. The US Union is more important than what our enemies are pushing.
Unite. This. House. The world needs US.
